Metalworks Hosts DigiDays

Metalworks Institute and Digidesign hosted a three-day DigiDays event from Oct. 27 to 29, at Metalworks Institute in Mississauga, ON.

“I was extremely pleased with the show!” exclaims Luc Bourgeois, Senior Product Specialist for Digidesign. “This has been our biggest DigiDays by far.” This was the third DigiDays event in Canada, with the first two being held in Montreal. There were about 400 people who attended over 28 events such as master classes, presentations, hands-on workshops and demos that focused on songwriting, tracking, music creation, studio mixing, live FOH mixing and recording, advanced post-production and mastering. “A lot of people came up and said, ‘Wow, thanks for doing this.’ The presentations were really appreciated.” The three-day event was designed to help attendees improve their craft while learning about the newest innovations in the industry.

Some of the show highlights included the unveiling of Pro Tools 7 software in Canada and demos of the Digidesign VENUE live sound console and the ICON 80-fader D-Control console. Attendees also visited the Metalworks studios for workshops and the LiveWire Remote recording truck. There were free master classes that focused on Pro Tools basics, virtual instruments and the ICON console. There was also a display room where attendees could see the latest that Celemony, Eventide, iZotope, McDSP, Native Instruments, Soundminer, URS and Waves had to offer.

Ten of the seminars were conducted by industry guest presenters including: Alfio Annibalini, recording engineer, mixer; Nick Blagona, mastering engineer; Graham Brewer, producer, Digitalis Audio Group; Justin Grey, songwriter, producer, remixer, programmer; Doug McClement, remote recording engineer, LiveWire Records; and Michael Nunan, CTV post-sound supervisor.

Bourgeois says that the presenters also loved the show. “Everybody who participated as a guest presenter hardly had any compensation from Digidesign, they all did it for the community and because they’re passionate about their work.” Annibalini was tracking a band for their demo CD for two days during the event, and apparently he got great results. Bourgeois says he asked him, “Do you think it’s because you had public watching you work for four hours at a time?” He said, “I don’t know, it could be … I’m wondering.” Bourgeois also says that Nunan gave an outstanding talk that was very in-depth and the starter classes that Mark Capoferri gave were extremely popular for people who had never used Pro Tools. “All of those guys did an outstanding job.”

Plans for a future Digidays are still in the works. “Given it’s the first time in Toronto, and everybody wants to do it again next year, we now have a template to work with, I think we should be doing it again next year,” advises Bourgeois. “I can’t promise it, but it’s looking like might be possible.”
